He did not mourn the loss of this aura in art instead, he mused on what might arrive in its place and what kinds of collective experience might replace the solitary appreciation of a piece. The aura was to do with its uniqueness, its originality and, thus, its authenticity. In 1936, philosopher Walter Benjamin published his influential essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction", in which he suggested that a painting possessed a certain "aura" which a photograph or a film did not. In the age of Pro-Tools, where every miscue, dropped beat and fluffed syllable can be corrected digitally, musician Lewis Durham, perhaps the most obsessive champion of all things analogue, has constructed a recording studio in which a resurrected Elvis would feel at ease. What also unites these four is a willingness to slow down, to run counter to the furious momentum of digitised contemporary culture, its speed and its pursuit of sanitised perfection – of sound, image and format. Instead of constant distraction, he celebrates modes of creativity that involve slowness, attentiveness and contemplation. In his book The Craftsman, American thinker Richard Sennett warns that we are in danger of losing ourselves if we turn our backs on the learnt skills and craftsmanship that helped give our lives meaning. It values the hand-made, the detailed and the patiently skilful over the instantly upgradeable and the disposable. Monitoring covers the accessibility of a site against ETSI EN 301 549, which for websites and mobile apps is similar to the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) levels A and AA. This is carried out by the Central Digital and Data Office ( CDDO). 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (“the accessibility regulations”) requires the Cabinet Office to monitor the accessibility of public sector websites and mobile apps. We use this to contact organisations when monitored. These are now becoming out of date and organisations need to review them and keep statements updated.Īccessibility statements contain contact information for the organisation. Many statements were written at the time the regulations were implemented (September 2018 for new websites and September 2019 for all remaining sites). After the monitoring process, 80% had fully compliant accessibility statements, and only 0.5% had no statement at all. 90% of websites had an accessibility statement when monitored, but only 7% of statements contained all required information. PDFs are generally less accessible than web pages, and often do not contain information that helps assistive technology interpret the content.Īccessibility statements are a new requirement for public sector websites that were introduced with the accessibility regulations. The main issues found are lack of visible focus, which affects keyboard users, low colour contrast, which affects visually impaired users, and parsing issues, that affects users of assistive technology. After sending a report to the website owner, and giving them some time to fix (normally 12 weeks), 59% had fixed the issues found or had short-term timelines for when the website would be fixed. We also found that generally smaller organisations did not have the capability or capacity to easily make fixes to their websites for accessibility issues.Īccessibility issues were found on nearly all tested websites. This is a proportionate approach because of the higher impact of such sites and recognises the burden of extra coronavirus-related work across the public sector. We have focussed on larger public sector organisations for our monitoring, especially central government (including agencies and arm’s length bodies), larger local government and central health organisations. The Central Digital and Data Office monitors compliance with the regulations and this report contains the findings from monitoring from February 2020 to November 2021. An accessibility statement, detailing any accessibility issues and who to contact if there is a problem, should be published for each website and app. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 requires public sector organisations to make their websites and mobile apps accessible. 999 Weight (g): 21 Diameter (mm): 33 Quality: Proof Mintage (pcs): 13. The name of Dom Pierre Perignon, a 17th-century French Benedictine who made great strides in perfecting winemaking in the Champagne region, still graces the bottles of select vintage champagne. Grapevines enjoy long, warm summers and cool, humid winters and therefore thrive in the Mediterranean region. Junipero Serra, who established California’s mission system, is recognized for setting firm roots for the state’s renowned winemaking. The Egyptians spread the craft throughout the Mediterranean and the Romans throughout Europe.Īlthough some grapes are native to North America, Europeans found them inferior for making wine, so settlers and missionaries brought and cultivated European varieties. Archeological evidence shows that humans have been making wine for 8,000 years. Wine is made by pressing juice from ripe grapes and allowing natural yeasts to ferment, turning the sugars into alcohol. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this sign manifests the “fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father’s kingdom, where the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the blood of Christ” (No. It becomes the best of the wine served at the feast: “You have kept the good wine until now” (John 2:10). When the wine falls short at the celebration, Mary asks Jesus to do something about it, and he quietly turns jugs of water into wine. It is the “new wine.” A beloved Bible story, the wedding at Cana, is a fine example and a prelude to Christ’s ministry and his ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of people. In the New Testament, wine comes to the forefront as life-giving and a sign of salvation. I trod them in my anger, and trampled them down in my wrath Their blood spurted on my garments, all my apparel I stained” (Isaiah 63:3). “The wine press I have trodden alone, and from the peoples no one was with me. In another Old Testament verse, the example of making wine is used to express anger and judgment: Wine represents blood, vines propagation, and vineyards the people of God. In that passage, like many that mention vines, vineyards and wine, the reference is symbolic. Grapevines make their initial appearance in Scripture with Noah, who leaves his ark after the Great Flood and “was the first to plant a vineyard” (Genesis 9:20). They stand to represent blood, propagation and the people of God. Grape vines, vineyards and wine make hundreds of appearances in Scripture. Wine is an omnipresent food that became spiritual nourishment for both Jews and Christians. With more than 300 references to wine, vineyards and winemaking, Scripture underscores the significance of the grape in biblical places and times.
